Owned by the McRae family since 1955, the Boone Hall Plantation has been open for tours since 1956. The family has made purchases throughout the years to carefully preserve the plantation and give you, the visitor, the feel of what it must have been like on a plantation back in the 1800’s. Despite the fact that it’s a tourist attraction, Boone Hall is actually a working plantation, harvesting tomatoes, pumpkins, strawberries, and peaches. In earlier years it was more known for cotton and pecans. A link at the bottom of the page offers more information, as well as a crop schedule where visitors can actually participate in the harvesting and take what they pick!
In addition to the crops, there are tours of the other working areas of the plantation, with staff in period clothing offering historical knowledge, a butterfly garden, and battle reenactments. It is little wonder that Boone hall Plantation is known as “America’s Most Photographed Plantation”!
